I have been working online in SEO for 15 years and as a consultant to many businesses. I establish a relationship with the organizations that I work with and have many relationships with those organizations to this day.

I find that SEO is fascinating on many levels!

Level 1- Old Skool

Organic, Organic, Organic! Not just for veggies anymore. In the early years of the Internet it was all about organic placement. Why? Because paid advertising didn’t exist. We spent many hours just swapping links one on one with other ‘web masters’. These were guys ( geeks) in their basements who straight coded. It was a simpler time. But there was no money.

Level 2 – Show me the Money

Money, Money, Money! What? I could charge you for a link placement? Hmmm, ‘Kewl’ (geek speak). Okay, I have 1000 visitors to my site I will charge you per day ( per m). That will pay for my SpiderMan action doll I have on layway at ‘geeks R us’. This phenomenon grew. Than, a geek in a college dorm room decided that a ‘directory’ of all the links, for Money would help pay for beer.

Level3- Search Engines Were Born

Congratulations its a Yahoo! Truly the concept that revolutionized the WWW ( which it was still called way back than). Hmm, a repository for ALL the www, in one place……so the geeks give us their links for free, we charge them for the placement of them and than we promise more hits to their site in exchange. How “Kewl” is that? Many tried, many failed this concept, but during the boom ( and it was similar to the Big Bang Theory we all made tons of money! Geeks abound were coding like mad and than someone….had another great idea.

Level4- Paid Placement within ‘Games’

Play With Me! It’s Free ! This is probably my favorite concept ( and the preconception of WEB 2.0 in my humble opinion). Gamers, ( IE: Geeks) were dominating the WWW ( yup still called that). So a company ( which I was involved with) figured out visitors liked to be entertained, we have to figure out how to keep them on the site so they see all the advertisers banners and click on them, but wait they aren’t clicking- why? Because they are playing the free games!…Ok, ah, ‘Product Placement’ sell ads WITHIN THE GAMES…….sticky websites were born!

Level 5- Is anyone out there?

Ah, human nature. Psychologist’s ( college students no less) decided that the www ( still) needed something….but what was it? Connectivity, interaction, social interaction- a strange concept to the ‘geeks’. “Message Boards” were born. Talk to me, tell me your secrets, and I will tell you many lies. Myspace anyone?
